On November 12, 2018, at the UN Headquarters in Geneva, Second Session of Group of Governmental Experts – Advisers to the UN General Secretary to consider the role of verification in advancing nuclear disarmament has started. As an expert from the Republic of Kazakhstan, Erlan G. Batyrbekov, Professor, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Academician of KazNANS and NEA RK, Director General of RSE “National Nuclear Center of the Republic of Kazakhstan”, takes part in the Session.
Group of Governmental Experts was formed in accordance with the UN General Assembly Resolution and includes 25 experts in the field of nuclear disarmament from various countries around the world. The result of the Group’s work will be an elaborated report on the problems of nuclear disarmament verification to be presented at the 74th UN General Assembly Session. As part of the Group’s work, three Sessions are planning to be held.
During the First Session held in May 2018, all the experts presented their views on the development and strengthening of practical and effective measures to control nuclear disarmament and the importance of these measures in achieving and maintaining a nuclear-weapon-free world, exchanged their views on this issue.
The current, Second Session is a key one as the main part of work on technical preparation of the Group report will be carried out, and fundamental issues will be resolved. During the Session, the basis for the future report is being formed, its individual provisions are being negotiated, the practical implementation of the nuclear disarmament verification process is being discussed, substantive discussions are being held on the principles of verification and creation of the necessary infrastructure to ensure the verification process and study of multilateral and non-discriminatory approach to the control nuclear weapons destruction.
Third Final Session will be held in Spring 2019 where final revision and coordination of the outcome document will be presented to the UN General Secretary.
