Two full-scale experiments have been conducted in the National Nuclear Center of RK to optimize the NNC developed technology on downblending and immobilization of irradiated uranium-graphite fuel of IGR reactor with participation of Battelle Energy Alliance LLC (BEA, LLC, USA) representatives.
The experiments aimed at optimization of matrix obtaining modes based on fly ash and portland cement. The matrix properties shall correspond to the required characteristics of physico-mechanical properties, and sustainability in conditions of storage medium change.
The first experiment was of methodical character – matrix components mixing modes were generated. The second experiment developed technology of downblending and immobilization using fresh, low enriched uranium-graphite fuel of IGR reactor. The compliance of obtained matrix with acceptability criteria (endurance, uniformity of texture, fuel distribution efficiency upon the matrix volume and others) shall be checked during the further material tests.
Technical meetings were held online upon experimental results with Managers of RRRFR Program (Russian Research Reactor Fuel Return Program).
