On October 31, Erlan Batyrbekov, Director General of RSE NNC RK, participated in the Ministerial Level Meeting of the Forum for Nuclear Cooperation in Asia (FNCA) held in hybrid format. This year the meeting is hosted by the Government of Mongolia and Cabinet Office of Japan. The key topic for round-table discussion of delegates was “Enhancing Radiation Cancer Therapy in Asian Region”. The speakers presented topical reports for various aspects of FNCA member states’ activities in this area.
During the discussion, for his part, Erlan Batyrbekov informed the colleagues about the current situation in nuclear and radiation medicine development in Kazakhstan. I noted that for the recent years, three new nuclear medicine centers were established in Kazakhstan (in Semey, Almaty and Astana), and provided with high technology equipment, which significantly contributed to number of patients’ medical examination. Moreover, he enounced intentions to establish such facilities in other cities of Kazakhstan, and to build proton therapy center in 2024 in Astana.
In the main session, a country report was presented about the progress of the Republic of Kazakhstan in peaceful use of atomic energy for year 2022, making emphasis on the main achievements in the domains such as atomic energy and nuclear fuel cycle, non-proliferation regime support, nuclear safety, radiation ecology.
In conclusion of the meeting, joint communique was discussed and adopted, reflecting the importance of regional partnership in peaceful and safe application of nuclear technologies for social and economic wellbeing of member states, formulated directions and concrete steps for successful functioning of the Forum for Nuclear Cooperation in Asia next year.
