In the course of the work visit to Japan, a Supplementary Agreement was signed on cooperation with the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA). The goal of the executed document is to continue research works in the field of peaceful utilization of nuclear power and technologies.
On the part of the National Nuclear Center of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the agreement was signed by the Director General Erlan Batyrbekov, on the part of the JAEA – by President Masanori Koguchi.
It is worth noting that under the long-term scientific and technical cooperation between the JAEA and NNC RK, large-scale projects of the EAGLE series have been successfully implemented, which aim to solve a relevant challenge of fast reactor safety.
By accomplishing the EAGLE project, the NNC not only develops and enhances its competences but also increasingly gains popularity as a base established for challenging theoretical and experimental research.
Thanks to the cooperative efforts taken by the Kazakhstani and Japanese specialists, by now, 11 large-scale in-pile experiments at RRF IGR and over 50 out-of-pile experiments at the EAGLE test bench have been successfully conducted.
Currently, in cooperation with the JAEA, the experimental program EAGLE-3 is successfully completed. Through the intermediary of the Marubeni company, NNC RK specialists have proceeded to the work on a new initiative as part of a biennial project EAGLE-3 post.
One of the key cooperation lines is to develop nuclear human resources. Jointly with the JAEA, educational programs are implemented, on-the-job training, workshops and training courses are arranged. For example, from 2012 onwards, the courses ‘Nuclear and radiological emergency preparedness’ and ‘Reactor technologies’ have been held on the NNC RK’s premises.
