STS Radiation Monitoring

02 April 2025

In March 2025, the National Nuclear Center of the Republic of Kazakhstan (NNC RK) commenced field operations within the territory of the Semipalatinsk Test Site (STS). Specialists from the Institute of Radiation Safety and Ecology (IRSE NNC RK) had made field trips to the monitoring stations situated along the border of the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Safety Area (SNSA) to carry out environmental sampling. Airborne aerosol sampling, borehole cleaning, and pumping, followed by the sampling of underground water, were conducted at the worksite. The selected samples were sent for laboratory analysis.
SNSA radiation monitoring has been regularly conducted since 2022. The monitoring aims to control the level of the gamma-ray equivalent dose rate and oversee the content of technogenic radionuclides in surface and underground water, air, soil, and vegetation to assess the radiation situation at the boundaries of radiation-hazardous areas.
